Hi Nick,
I agree with most of what you say, on top here is my own experience...
I've been a week now with Rackspace Cloud after being 3 (miserable) years with Mediatemple, and the speed is UN-BE-LI-VEABLE!
All the 3 years spent on the DV 'EXTREME' version at MEDIATEMPLE (so supposedly the top of their virtual servers...) I had thousands of unexpected down time, slow processing, solr issues etc. I have lost tens of thousands (if not hundreds of thousands) of dollars on loss of business AND on maintenance cost with developers trying to find out what was wrong on our CMS.
Of course support @ Mediatemple always said it was our scripts and never the server. But now that we are with a new host, we find out that there is no problem. The load/resources issues were with THEM! I can't say how happy i am now to have left them.

I would simply say...DON'T GO WITH MEDIATEMPLE if you are a sane person

Signed up with them, THEN told it would take a day to get approval. Okay. Then I get approval the next day and then find out I have 26 days left. WTF?

Trying to upload a site and found the user interface buggy as in annoyingly laid out. I then had my ip address banned TWICE for no reason while trying to upload my site. Funny how the ip was okay to sign up with. And this ip works fine with godaddy and my blogs.

Each time they ban you you have to wait ten minutes for the ban to end.

I spent hours and hours trying to get a website up, but due to their buggy FTP I tried a 3rd party company and it couldn't do it. I had the information all in correctly.

I then visited sites and found this to be a common problem with them.
I canceled my account.

Hi Richard,

They have great customer service. Just not so happy with their offerings from what I've experienced. I still keep an account with them to host minor sites but we went back to keeping our own server. From the feedback I've gotten both through the blog and on Twitter, it seems to be hit and miss with them. Some people are extremely happy with them. Some people are very frustrated. I fall into the latter.

I love MediaTemple. We have been using them since 2004. While we have had a few glitches here and there to complain about over the years, I have found them always willing to roll up their sleeves and dive in to help address our concerns in a timely and thoughtful manner. I recommend them to anybody, but then I have not experienced the frustrations you have.

I did a search on the keywords:
media temple is a pain in the ass
and found your article. I was just typing in the words venting my frustration with Media Temple. I have had 3 or 4 clients over the last year that had set up brand new Media Temple accounts, and then asked me to work on their site.
I constantly find working within the mediatemple environment to be well, a pain in the ass. In fact, as I write this, I'm thinking about setting a Media Temple hourly rate premium for future clients of $50 an hour. Then again, maybe I should just decline all client work that wants to use Media Temple, there are things more important than money after all, such as sanity!

Wow! Scott gave me a call directly to talk about all these issues shortly after posting this. That's really amazing customer service.

I'm not sure anything will move on the transfer of the sites issue but I can honestly say that I feel like my comments were heard and listened to. Great job on responding (mt). I've never seen that from any other company as far as online dialogue is concerned.

Hi Nick, Our sincerest apologies for the frustrating experience with (mt). If you have a few minutes, I'd love to speak with you and address your concerns as well as clarify some of the miscommunications you seem to have experienced in the support process.
